A special CBI court in Ranchi sentenced RJD chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to five years imprisonment after he was found guilty in a case associated with the Fodder Scam on Wednesday.

This is the third Fodder Scam case in which Yadav has been convicted. The latest case pertains to the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from the Chaibasa district treasury during Yadav's tenure as CM in 1992-93.

Another former Bihar chief minister, Jagannath Mishra, was also found guilty and received a prison term of five years.

As many as 50 accused were convicted, including former Bihar minister Vidyasagar Nishad, ex-Bihar Assembly PAC chief Jagdish Sharma, former MLAs Dhruv Bhagat and R K Rana and three ex-IAS officers.

The RJD has vowed to appeal Yadav's conviction.

Yadav is currently serving a 3.5 year sentence in another Fodder Scam case related to embezzlement from the Deoghar Treasury; he was found guilty in the Deoghar case in December.

Yadav was first convicted in a Fodder Scam case in 2013, though he obtained bail soon after being sentenced to five years imprisonment.

There are two more Fodder Scam cases against him, related to Dumka and Doranda treasuries, that are continuing.
