An arrest warrant was issued against the Union minister Babul Supriyo at a Kolkata court on Friday. The Alipore sessions court had, two weeks back, issued a summons notice to minister of state for heavy industry, Babul Supriyo, for verbally outraging the modesty of a woman, a Trinamool Congress leader during a TV show two months back.
During the show Babul had told Trinamool leader Mahua Mitra, while contesting her argument, “Are you intoxicated, Mahua?” Mahua is a raw liquor consumed by tribal people in Bengal and Jharkhand.
A day later, Maitra went to Kolkata police and lodged a complaint against the minister, who is a famous singer as well.
The case was taken up by Alipore court and it issued a summon notice to Babul, which the minister did not comply. On Thursday, Kolkata police submitted a chargsheet in the court and named Babul as an offender who allegedly outraged the modesty of a woman verbally.
“Now, as the arrest warrant has been issued, he could be arrested at any point of time,” said an officer of Kolkata police at the rank of deputy commissioner.
Babul termed it childish behaviour on the part of Kolkata police.
“I am not taking it seriously. I will take steps after consulting my lawyer,” he said.
