Kollam murder: 'Killer mom' Jayamol's mental health to be tested again

The police team, probing the murder of a teenager in Kollam district of Kerala, is likely to examine the mental health of the victim's mother who has confessed to commit the crime.

The police are planning to get Jayamol in custody on Monday and subject her to detailed tests again. The move is based on her daughter's statement that Jayamol was mentally unstable.

The way Jayamol handled the body of her son, Jithu Job, after the murder has aroused suspicions about her mental health.

The police were of the view that Jayamol was mentally stable. However, they have not conveyed this to the court.

Jithu, a student of Kundara MGD Boys’ High School, was missing since Monday night. Ever since Jithu went missing, police investigators visiting the house had met with a grieving mother who raised absolutely no suspicion.

In fact, the cops even comforted her when she told them that she hadn't eaten since the boy went missing.

But a contradictory statement she gave on Wednesday gave her in. When the CI asked about a burn mark on her hand, she told him it was from a thorn prick from a rose.

In the evening, when an SI asked the same question, she said she burnt her hand while lighting fire in the kitchen. She wavered when the cop asked if she didn't have a gas stove and that got the police suspicious.

On inspecting the compound, they found traces of a fire near the wall. Jaya told the cops that she had burnt off dry leaves. One of the boy's sandals was found near the fire. When the cops scaled the wall, and landed on the adjacent plot, the remaining pair of the sandals was found.

The cops saw crows swarming near a nearby house that was in ruins inside a rubber plantation. They found the charred body of the boy inside, burnt beyond recognition. When the cops returned to confront the woman, she confessed.

Jithu’s sister on Friday said her mother had been emotionally unstable for the past one year.

The young girl reported that the woman used to experience fiery tempers but cooled down soon after, due to which the family shied away from seeking treatment.
