KCR rejects demands for CBI probe into Nayeem gang

KCR Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao

Telangana opposition parties demanded a CBI probe into the criminal activities of Maoist-turned-gangster Nayeem, who was killed in an encounter with police on the outskirts of Hyderabad on August 8. The government, however, rejected the demand.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced in the assembly that there was no need for a CBI inquiry since the SIT of the state police had already handled the case with “great efficiency”. He also asserted that his government would not spare anyone involved with Nayeem's criminal deals. Names of a number of police officers and others, who allegedly had connection with the gangster, are already doing the rounds.

According to KCR, the gangster was involved in 174 cases including 52 murders and ruled roost for over two and a half decades, extorting money from the innocents and illegally taking over lands. Nayeem was earlier appointed by the police as a mole, but later he went rogue and stepped out of the control of police.

He is accused of killing several Maoists and human right activists, and was the main accused in the sensational killing of senior IPS officer K.S.Vyas in Hyderabad in 1993.

KCR accused the previous Congress governments of allowing Nayeem to roam free despite several charges against him, triggering strong protests from the opposition members.

“The Nayeem gang had committed heinous crimes in the state. During the reign of the previous governments, Nayeem continued his criminal activities without any hindrance,” the chief minister said.

“My government appointed an SIT to investigate the crimes. Four special teams were constituted to carry out investigation of the cases registered against the gang. As many as 174 cases were registered. Police examined 741 witnesses and arrested 124 accused. During the raids conducted on the hideouts of Nayeem's gang across the state, police seized 21 fire arms, 21 cars, 26 motor cycles and cash worth Rs 2.95 crores. The police also seized documents of properties to the extent of 1,015 acres, house sites to the extent of 1.67 lakh Sq. Yds and 27 houses,” KCR added.
