Vanity, thy name is Shantha. A commercial tax officer's wife in Hubballi, Shantha has sure set a new benchmark for a lavish wardrobe, and of course ill-gotten wealth.

Her staggering collection of 5,000-odd sarees worth more than Rs. 2 crore, has shocked the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths who raided the house in the wee hours of Tuesday. The sarees were recovered from the house of Kariappa Ningappa Karnal, assistant commissioner (enforcement), Commercial Tax Department, who is due to retire in a few months.

While the ACB launched simultaneous raids on the houses and offices of seven officers across the state, Kariappa's house posed a challenge as they had to spend the whole day counting sarees. The sleuths have seized documents pertaining to two bungalows, three plots and three flats in Hubballi and Bengaluru worth crores, Rs. 8 lakh in cash (wrapped in sarees), a Honda Amaze car, bank deposits worth Rs. 5.5lakh, booking amount of Rs. 12 lakh for a new property among others.

Two bank lockers are yet to be examined.
