Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who are out on bail after being arrested in a sedition case, are likely to be rusticated for a period of two to five years, if sources are to be believed.

University's students union president Kanhaiya Kumar may also face action with sources saying that he is likely to be fined Rs 10,000, according to CNN IBN.

Kanhaiya was arrested on February 9 after a controversial event was held on the campus to commemorate the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged in 2013 after being convicted in the Parliament attack case.

The event had sparked off a storm after reports claimed that anti-India slogans were raised during the event. Umar and Anirban surrendered before Delhi Police on February 23 after the police slapped them with sedition charges. The three were granted interim bail by a Delhi court.

Earlier a high-level JNU panel had recommended rustication of Kanhaiya, Khalid, Bhattacharya and two other students for their alleged role in the controversial event.

Kanhaiya's arrested had triggered a nation-wide controversy with many scholars and activists lambasting the police action on the campus. The controversy was even followed by a high decibel debate on nationalism and patriotism.
