Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, arrested in a sedition case, was granted interim bail for six months by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.
A bench of Justice Pratibha Rani gave the relief to Kanhaiya, who is presently lodged in Tihar jail under judicial custody, by asking him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of like amount.
The court also asked Kanhaiya to give undertaking that he wouldn't participate, actively or passively, in any anti-national activity and that he should cooperate with the ongoing probe.
Special Public Prosicutor Anil Soni said, the court had put a stamp on Delhi police's investigation. He said the court had vindicated their stand that anti-national activity did take place in the JNU.
Lawyer Vrinda Grover said she was happy with the bail order but said the surety would be provided only on Thursday when Kanhaiya Kumar is expected to walk out of Tihar Central Jail.
Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12 by the Delhi police after a group of students conducted an event on the campus to commemorate the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, who was hanged after being convicted in the Parliament attack case.
Anti-India and pro-Afzal slogans were allegedly raised during the event which sparked off a nation wide debate on free speech and nationalism. Police have also arrested two other JNU students on charges of sedition for having raised supposedly anti-national slogans.
Kanhaiya's case had led to a bitter war between the government and the opposition, particularly after he was beaten up on February 15 and 17 when he was taken to the Patiala House Court.
