Exasperated with the callous attitude of police and the lopsided probe, three survivors of gang rape on the Jevar-Bulandsher Highway made a bid to end their lives. The women tried to commit suicide in the wee hours of Sunday at their house, however, timely intervention of relatives and neighbours saved their lives.

The wife of the car driver tried to hang herself from the ceiling, while the deceased scrap merchant’s sister and sister-in-law tried to commit suicide by setting themselves ablaze.

They took this step as even after 10 days of the gruesome incident, the police did not arrest the culprits.

The car driver's wife tried to end her life at around 3 am in the morning. When family members who had woken up to offer namaz saw her they saved her life. The other two survivors has tried to immolate themselves in the room, but family prevented them from taking the extreme step.

It may be recalled that this shocking gang rape had taken place on May 24 on Jevar-Bulandsher highway as the family of eight were travelling.

The women revealed that five criminals, on gun point, brutally raped them and shot dead a male member of their family when he tried to resist the attempt to rape.

They have also accused the police of hushing up the matter. Earlier, the district magistrate B.N. Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police Love Kumar and Chief Medical Officer Anurag Bhargava had ruled out rape charges.

The SSP confirmed the news of suicide attempt and said, “A circle officer has been directed to meet the three victims and find out the details of the matter and added that victims will be given all possible help".
