A day after Smriti Irani took charge of the Textiles Ministry, a Janata Dal (United) leader sparked off an outrage by allegedly making an insensitive comment on her.

While talking to a TV channel, Ali Anwar, a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar reportedly said Irani got the Textiles Ministry so that she could now cover her body.

The sexist analogy has put party leader Nitish Kumar in a fix as the Bihar Chief Minister is known to be a champion of women's rights. The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded an unconditional apology from Anwar and said JD(U) has a history of senior leaders having misogynistic bent of mind.

Anwar, meanwhile, has refused to apologise saying there is nothing sexual in his remark.
