JAWANS' VIDEOS

Rijiju assures action, but hopes it doesn't become order of the day

Kiren Rijiju Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju

With jawans of the BSF and the CRPF complaining against poor food and service condition, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said that the government was seriously looking into the treatment being meted out to the paramilitary soldiers.

“We will ensure that such incidents do not take place again. The senior officers of the CRPF and the BSF have been told to look into the provision for quality food for the jawans,” he told THE WEEK.

Rijiju said that those were individual issues and people responsible would be taken to task. “But I hope it does not become the order of the day and free for all kind of situation, with every jawan posting his video,” said the minister.

Days after BSF constable Tej Bahadur Yadav posted a video claiming that poor quality food was being served to soldiers on the Line of Control, Jeet Singh, a CRPF jawan, complained about the lack of facilities in his force. Singh, in a video post, also said that there was discrimination between the army and paramilitary personnel in the country.

The CRPF is the world’s largest paramilitary force, with a sanctioned strength of close to 4 lakh men.

With both the video going viral on social platforms, the Prime Minister's Office has sought a report from the home ministry. Sources said the PMO asked about the systemic failure that led to jawans reaching out to the home minister and the prime minister directly using the social media.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that he is personally monitoring the quality of food being served in the Army camp.
