More youth from Jammu and Kashmir will be recruited to security forces to counter the growing civil unrest in Kashmir.

This was decided a few weeks ago at a meeting of the local BJP leaders in which BJP president Amit Shah and general secretary Ram Madhav were present.

The meeting was told one battalion each of police, CRPF, BSF and Army will be raised from the state besides a women's battalion to counter the protests. They were also informed that the government will work with ''stakeholders'' in the state to normalise the situation.

Mohammad Yousuf Sofi, BJP legislator in the upper house of the state, told THE WEEK, “We have decided to provide more employment to the local youth,” and added that the youth from the state will be recruited to police, paramilitary forces and the Army. The government has so far employed 8,000 special police officers (SPO) and approval for another 2,000 is expected soon, he said.

Sofi said the government will also coach and train more youth in different skills to help them find jobs. “We believe that unemployment is the main cause of protests in Kashmir. The previous governments were corrupt.”

He said Prime Minister’s Office-sponsored Mudra Bank will be also disbursing Rs 25,000 each to youth who want to establish small entrepreneur units.
