ASSEMBLY POLLS

It's AAP vs Others in Punjab election

prakash-singh-badal-pti [File] Chief Minister Badal, however, maintains that there is no tie up between SAD and Congress | PTI

It is Aam Admi Party vs others in the upcoming Punjab Assembly election. That became clear when Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal chose to lambast the AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and had very little to say about traditional and life-long rival, the Congress and its chief ministerial candidate Capt Amarender Singh. Elections to the state legislature are due in February next.

Badal rubbished Kejriwal's contention that the SAD and Congress had compromised at some level, saying that the Delhi chief minister did not know the difference between wheat and paddy, or where the SAD and the Congress stood in Punjab's politics. He also charged Kejriwal with becoming chief minister of Delhi for the first time, with the support of the Congress, and said the people of Punjab would not be fooled as they knew that Congress and AAP were two sides of the same coin.

In fact, there have been a lot of rumblings in Punjab over a secret "compromise" between the SAD and the Congress. On the streets in the state, it is widely believed that the strategy is to keep Kejriwal, and his party away from the state. It is presumed that the strong anti-incumbency of the ruling Akali government, will prevent it from returning to office. The understanding between the SAD and Congress, sources allege, is if Akalis take on the AAP, and Congress emerges winner, the latter will not file cases of corruption against the Badals.
