Telangana police on Thursday registered a criminal case against Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh following a complaint against him over his recent tweets that the state police had hosted a fake website of the Islamic State to trap the Muslim youth to join the terror outfit.

The complaint was filed by Telangana Rahstra Samithi (TRS) legislator M. Gopinath. The Jubilee Hills police booked Singh under IPC sections 501 and 505 (for printing defamatory matter and provoking breach of peace).

“We have registered a case and we will examine the contents before proceeding further,” the Jubilee Hills station house officer S. Venkat Reddy said.

The Congress leader had triggered a controversy by alleging that the Telangana Police had created a bogus IS website to post inflammatory information to trap Muslim men.  He went on to add that the website was radicalising Muslim youths and encouraging them to become IS modules. In a series of tweets, the ex-CM of Madhya Pradesh further said that "It was on their (Telangana police) information that the MP police arrested the accused in the bomb blast in train in Shajapur district of MP. It also resulted in Saifulla encounter in Kanpur the same day”.

Singh also had demanded that the Telangana chief minister order an investigation and punish those responsible for the “heinous crime”.

“If the police were following his (chief minister’s) orders, then he should take responsibility and resign,” he had said.

This extraordinary charge evoked strong reaction from the state government and the police. The Telangana Minister for Information Technology and Industries K.T. Rama Rao, who is the son of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, demanded that the Congress leader withdraw his comments unconditionally.

“Most irresponsible and reprehensible thing coming from a former CM. Request you to withdraw these comments unconditionally or provide evidence,” he tweeted.

The Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma refuted Singh’s charges and said “I don’t know on what basis he has made such wild allegations. They are utterly baseless and we strongly deny his comments,” he said.

Sharma said the Telangana police had never said they were behind the arrest of those responsible for the bomb blast in Madhya Pradesh. “We are doing our duty sincerely. We are offended with his comments,” he said.

But Singh, who is the AICC general secretary in-charge of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, stuck to his statement, saying he had evidence to substantiate it.

The Telangana Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy demanded an apology from Singh saying that the Congress leader was deliberately trying to malign the image of Telangana police.
