A 29-year-old IPS officer has been arrested after he was caught cheating in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination that was held recently in Chennai. Safeer Karim was arrested by Intelligence Bureau officers on Monday.

Karim, hailing from Aluva in Kerala and serving as assistant superintendent of police in Nanguneri, Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, had taken a mobile phone and bluetooth device to the examination hall. According to media reports, his wife, Joicy Joy, dictated the answers to him.

Karim's wife was arrested from Hyderabad.

He had decided to take the UPSC exams as he wanted to join the IAS, according to an investigating officer. Karim had ranked 112 in UPSC exams in 2015.

The Intelligence Bureau had put him under surveillance after they suspected that he had cheated in the UPSC examinations which were held earlier. His wife was also under surveillance.

The IB officials had followed him to the examination centre and saw him handing over his mobile phone before entering into the exam hall. However, he had another phone concealed in his socks and a miniature camera on his shirt.

20 minutes into the exam, the IB officials entered the exam hall and searched him. They found the mobile phone bluetooth-enabled devices. Upon questioning, he admitted that he had taken photographs of the question paper and sent to Joy who helped him with the answers.
