"None of these leaders instigated the mob to pull down the mosque. Rather, they were trying to prevent them," said a prominent VHP leader

  • Iqbal Ansari, son of deceased Hashim Ansari, the oldest plaintiff in the case who passed away recently, told THE WEEK, “Muslims of Ayodhya welcome the court’s verdict. The whole world watched what happened on December 6, 1992, when the mosque was razed. Everyone knows who were involved and who were provoking the crowd. If the guilty were not punished according to law , it will shake the faith of Muslims in law and justice.”

There are mixed reactions in the sacred city of Ayodhya about the momentous Supreme Court verdict in Babri mosque demolition case.

The court, on Wedensday, had allowed hearing in the criminal conspiracy case registered against prominent BJP leaders like L.K.Advani, Uma Bharti, Murli Manohar Joshi and others.

Reacting to the verdict, VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) media-in-charge of Ayodhya, Sharad Sharma, told THE WEEK that the matter can not be described as a criminal conspiracy. "None of these leaders instigated the mob to pull down the mosque. Rather, they were trying to prevent them."

Khaliq Ahamed Khan, who is convener of hilal committee , Faizabad, and a nominee of Maulana Mehfooz-ur Rehman, who is an applicant in the case, told THE WEEK, “We wanted justice. In this case, justice was denied. It is a clear case of criminal conspiracy and it is quite obvious as to who were involved in it. They had assured parliament , assembly and the nation that nothing will happen to the structure. They betrayed the whole country.”

SC has ordered that the trial be concluded in two years. Since Kalyan Singh is presently governor, he enjoys immunity. The Lucknow court has been asked by the apex cout to initiate the proceedings in the case in coming four weeks.
