Ghalib Guru, son of Afzal Guru, who was hanged in 2013 for his alleged role in the Parliament attack, has shined in the class XII exams, scoring a distinction.

Ghalib scored 441 marks, 88 per cent, and is now aspiring to become a doctor.

In class X, he had secured 94 per cent marks two years after his father was hanged.

''I am attending a coaching centre in Srinagar for National Eligibility cum Entrance Exams,'' Ghalib told THE WEEK. ''My father wanted me to become a doctor, so I am trying hard.''

He said he will also try to appear in other competitive exams but his preference is to secure admission to a medical college. ''I want to fulfil my father's wish and make him proud. Today, I am remembering (him) with a lot of reverence.''

His mother, Tabassum Guru, said she is happy with Ghalib's results.

''He worked very hard and is now focussing on the entrance exams for medical college,'' she said.

Ghulam Muhammad, Ghalib's grandfather, said they were thankful to the people for their prayers and wishes for Ghalib.

''We are happy,'' he said. “This is an occasion of celebration. We don't need anything except good wishes and prayers of the people.”

The news of Ghalib scoring a distinction was greeted with cheer on Facebook.

Majid Maqbool, a journalist wrote on his page,''Omar Abdullah might as well tweet and congratulate Ghalib Afzal Guroo!'' Another said Ghalib has done Kashmir proud like his father.

Ghalib scoring a distinction comes a day after Insha Mushtaq, the face of pellet horror of 2016, passed her class X examinations.

Her results evoked a massive outpouring of appreciation and support on social media.

Insha lost eyesight in both her eyes after being hit by a volley of pellets inside her home in July 2016.

She was operated on many times, but her injuries were beyond repair.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that government has allotted a gas agency to Insha and provided a job to her father.

Ghalib was a toddler when Afzal was arrested for his alleged role in the Parliament attack, which occurred in 2001.

Tabassum then shifted to her parent's home at Baramulla along with Ghalib.

She would spend most of the time at a hospital in Sopore where she works as a paramedic.
