Even as the election results trends suggest that the BJP is headed for a comfortable victory in both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said the trends emerging from vote counting in Gujarat are heartening.

According to the Congress leader, the grand old party is showing much improved performance compared to the last assembly elections, reports PTI.

"The Congress is leading on some 75 seats which is good. This is twice better than the last elections...What if we could not reach the destination, the journey has been good. And the final tally may even be better than this," Tharoor said outside Parliament.

He claimed that the party's improved performance in the polls was because of the efforts of Rahul Gandhi who has been elected president of the party recently, reports PTI. He further claimed that Rahul Gandhi managed to connect with people on the ground through his campaign rallies.

He, however, was evasive on the possible causes that led to his party's poor performance in the elections.

"Let all the results come and then only we will be able to analyse what were the reasons," he said., according to PTI.

Meanwhile, the mood at the Congress headquarters was despondent as trends from Gujarat indicated a clear lead for the BJP.

With trends indicating a substantial gap between the two parties, the Congress party office in Delhi wore a deserted look. While it was agog with excitement just a day before, when Rahul Gandhi took over as Congress President, the place had more mediapersons than leaders present.
