The Gujarat government is reported to have assured leaders of the Thakore community of modification in the existing prohibition laws in the state.

According to sources, the assurance was given by senior minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama during a talk with five representatives of the Thakore community in Gandhinagar on Sunday. Thakore community belongs to the OBC.

Thakore community leader Alpesh Thakore had staged a symbolic dharna in the state captial earlier in the day demanding stricter prohibition laws. An estimated 15,000-20,000 people attended the rally. Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani also joined hands with the Thakores and made an appearance on the stage.

Thakore later announced that they would celebrate the victory on Monday by lighting diyas at homes.

Gujarat is the first dry state in the country. However, liquor is available easily for those having “the right contacts”, and the state in the past has witnessed various tragedies in which people lost their lives.

According to sources, Thakore has demanded a fine of Rs 5 lakh and imprisonment of 10 years for those selling liquor and a fine of Rs 2 lakh and two years of imprisonment for those consuming liquor.

To prevent any untoward incident, more than 500 police personnel, including one IG, 4 SP and 9 DYSPs, were deployed.
