Gujarat Congress MLAs claim threat calls from Ravi Pujari

Opposition Congress in Gujarat on Tuesday claimed that some of its MLAs and party's state in-charge Gurudas Kamat were receiving extortion and threat calls from gangster Ravi Pujari. Opposition leader Shankersinh Vaghela raised the issue in the ongoing session of the state assembly.

"Ten MLAs, including Govabhai Rabari, C.K. Raulji, Amit Chavda and Chandrikaben Baria have received threat calls traced to countries like Laos, Algeria, Bolivia, Thailand, Croatia, Bhutan, and Turkey, which is a matter of grave concern," Vaghela told the House.

Raulji, MLA from Godhra, received a text message in Ravi Pujari's name and the message said that he should cough up Rs 10 crore or face consequences.

Borsad MLA Amit Chavda said had received a call threatening him to pay Rs 10 crore or meet the fate of councillor Pragnesh Patel who was shot dead in January allegedly by Pujari's gang.

Vaghela said that Shaktisinh Gohil, another MLA, had told him three days ago about a threat call but he did not want to discuss the issue. Gohil is currently abroad.

“ I would request you to ask Central government to verify the calls traced to foreign countries and take the help of secret agencies like RAW to locate the calls. PM (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) should also be told about that," Vaghela demanded.

In his reply, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said that the police were looking into the claims made by the Congress. He also said a team was sent to Thailand in connection with the probe into the murder of the Borsad councillor.

He said not only the Congress, but the legislators as well as some leaders of the BJP had also received such calls.

Vaghela raised the issue on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day visit to the state.
