The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday expressed confidence over its victory in Gujarat where 68 per cent of people have turned up for the first phase of elections on Saturday.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain told ANI that people in Gujarat have decided to help Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP win by securing three-fourths majority. "The way in which first phase of Gujarat Assembly elections has concluded, it seems the public has decided to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP win by securing three-fourths majority. Gujarat has cleared the misgivings of Congress through its turnout in the first phase."

Noting that the people of the state denounced the kind of language the Congress used against the prime minister, he said "The voting has been in favour of the BJP and there is an excitement among the people, “ reports ANI.

Expressing confidence over the party's victory, Bizay Sonkar Shastri, another BJP leader, said voters in the first phase of polls have voted for the saffron party. "The first phase voting will benefit our party and, moreover, the heavy membership within the party will play a positive role here," Shastri said, according to ANI.

In fact, the first phase of elections were crucial for the Congress which is expected to improve its performance in Kutch and Saurashtra region. In 2012, out of the six seats in Kutch, the BJP had won five and the Congress one.

Congress leader Raju Waghmare said, "It is a very good sign for the Congress and there are two reasons behind it. Some BJP voters are very nervous and they are disappointed by their party's performance. On the other hand, whatever the turnout is right now, the public wants a change and that change is possible with Congress, “ reports ANI.

Pointing out that the voter turnout of 68 per cent is a good sign for the grand old party, he said the party is taking the first phase of polls seriously.
