Girl falls into 400 feet deep borewell, rescue operation on

Rescue operations are on to pull out a six-year-old girl, who fell into an open borewell in Janjarwada village in Athani taluk in Belagavi on Saturday evening.

Kaveri (6), who was playing with her younger sibling accidentally slipped into the open pit. The owner of the land had abandoned the borewell after it yielded no water.

While the district administration is carrying out rescue operation by drilling a hole parallel to the borewell, which is estimated to be 400 feet deep, the NDRF teams from Hatti Gold mines in Raichur, Hyderabad and Pune are rushing to the spot.

According to district authorities, the child is stuck inside, while the earth has caved in when her mother tried to save her.

District incharge minister Ramesh Jarkiholi expressed his anguish over the safety of the child and called for proactive measures to curb the menace of open borewell pits in the state.
