'Ghost barber of UP' giving sleepless nights to women, police

There is a ghost barber on the prowl in Uttar Pradesh, mysteriously chopping off women's braids. As many as 36 such incidents have been reported from Ghaziabad, Agra, Mathura, Hapur, Badaun, Urai, Jhansi, Farrukhabad, Kushinagar and Allahabad districts of the state, but the police have failed to make a headway in the case.

In Agra’s Dayalbagh and Lalghari, women complained that the ghost barber cut their hair when they were asleep. However, the police said the incidents seemed suspicious.

Munni Devi, 50, who lives in Dayalbagh area of Agra, said her hair was cut when she was sleeping at her home. However, she could not tell anything about the person who chopped the hair or failed to explain how the incident took place.

Rajani, a victim from nearby Aligarh district, said she noticed that her hair was cut when she was sweeping the floor of her house. She too could not describe how the hair was cut although she claimed that she saw the hair falling on the ground.

The matter has reached to top cops of the state. DGP Sulkhan Singh said police officers will convey to people that the incidents are mere rumorurs and ask them not to pay attention to them.

ADG (law and order) Anand Kumar has directed all district police chiefs to talk to people in this regard and added that no organised gang has any role in these incidents.

These incidents are not confined to UP alone. In the past couple of days, more than 100 such incidents have been reported from UP and other neighbouring states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, MP and Delhi. Most of the incidents in UP have been reported from Mathura district.

It may be noted that the incident of ghost barber is quite similar to the monkey-man scare which had taken place a few years ago. Back then, there were a spate of complaints from various parts of the state with people claiming to be bitten by monkey-man.
