Two dead in a gas-leak incident onboard INS Vikramaditya

Two persons died in an incident of gas leak on board INS Vikramaditya, which was undergoing maintenance repairs at Karnataka’s coastal town Karwar, on Friday evening.

Maintenance work was being undertaken in the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Compartment of the vessel.

Four people - two naval sailors and two civilian workers- were rushed to Naval Hospital at Karwar following the leak this evening.

“Two persons, namely Shipwright Artificer Class 4, Rakesh Kumar and Shri Mohandas Kolambkar, an employee of M/s Royal Marine, succumbed due to gas inhalation,” a Navy statement said.

The condition of the other two is said to be stable.

The Navy has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
