Former Army chief joins SAD ranks

Former Army chief Gen J.J. Singh (retd) joined Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) on Saturday.

"I am ready for battle. I take up a challenge only to win," the first Sikh to become the Army chief had said when the decks were cleared by SAD chief Sukhbir Badal a few days ago.

A Captain might cross swords with the General at the hustings in Punjab on Feb 4. Though the party has not confirmed it, the retired general is likely to be fielded against Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh in his home constitutency of Patiala (urban).

While Capt Amarinder Singh, a former chief minister of Punjab, has never lost an election in Patiala in the last 15 years, the SAD strategy is to tie him down to this constituency and thus prevent him from campaigning statewide at a time when the by-election for the crucial Amritsar Parliament constituency is also slated to be held. It is a seat that the former chief minister vacated to protest against the Supreme Court verdict on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal.
