An FIR has been registered against the Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque, Nur-ur Rehman Barkati, for not removing the red beacon on his car.

An NGO worker lodged a complaint with the Lake Police Station in Kolkata, near Park Circus. “We have received the complaint. An inquiry will be done,” said an officer of the police station.

Meanwhile, Barkati told THE WEEK, “What will happen if I don’t remove? Will I be hanged?”

The Imam had earlier issued a fatwa against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and even justified the jihad, calling it part of religious ritual. “It has been going on for hundreds of years,” said he.

Barkati had warned Modi on his move to ban cow meat across India saying he would then issue fatwa to make India a “Muslim nation.” He cautioned the Muslims of West Bengal against joining BJP saying that they would be beaten up.

The top official of the West Bengal police refused to comment as Barkati is adamant that he will not remove the red beacon. The Imam is known to be very close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
