Eman will be shifted to a UAE hospital for further treatment

Nearly three months after she  landed in Mumbai on February 11, Eman Ahmed, the world's former heaviest woman at 500 kg, will be leaving the city for VPS Burjeel hospital in UAE on Thursday morning.

Eman, who was admitted in privately run Saifee hospital in Charni Road, lost 324 kg following intensive physiotherapy sessions and a sleeve gastrectomy surgery which she underwent on March 7. In this surgical weight loss procedure, the patient's stomach size was reduced by 15 per cent of its original size. In a statement, the hospital's COO Huzefa Shehabi said, "Eman is stable, in good health and fit to fly. The team of doctors from Saifee will brief the patient's relative and the team of doctors from VPS Burjeel about her current medical status."

While Eman flew to Mumbai from Alexandria in a cargo freighter flight with a team of doctors from Saifee hospital and a wide range of medical equipment to stabilize her during the journey, she will travel to Abu Dhabi in an Egypt Special Airbus. She will be treated in VPS Burjeel hospital for free of cost.

The 36-year-old Egyptian national also suffered from co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension, water retention, heart failure, gout, hypothyroidism, and partial paralysis due to a stroke she suffered from in 2014. A CT scan conducted in the hospital revealed 40 per cent of her brain had got damaged following the stroke and that she was suffering from scar epilepsy.

Dr Aparna Bhasker, a bariatric surgeon, who was a part of the team of doctors who treated Eman said her condition had improved by 75 - 80 per cent as her co-morbidities were under control. "She now only needs physiotherapy so she can eat without a feeding tube and sit up for longer periods without any support," she said while speaking to THE WEEK.

On April 14, Eman's sister Shaimaa and the treating doctors had a major spat after she posted a video on social media calling Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the chief bariatric surgeon, a liar. A few days later, 12 out of the 13 doctors who were treating Eman resigned from her care."We were told Eman would be kept in Saifee hospital for at least six months, so I was worried when Dr Lakdawala informed me we would be sent back to Egypt in mid April," said Shaimaa. Since then, Eman underwent a CT scan and her physiotherapy sessions were being continued in the seventh floor of the hospital's main building, after she was shifted out of her special 1000 sq ft room.

Though Eman's treatment in Burjeel hospital is not yet finalised, Dr Bhasker said the doctors were planning another bariatric surgery. While flying to the hospital, Eman and Shaimaa will be accompanied by a team of nine doctors and will be transported to the airport in a special ambulance arranged by Saifee hospital.
