Days after Yoga guru Baba Ramdev sparked off a storm by making a controversial comment over chanting 'Bharat Mata ki jai,' Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah came out in support of him.

Ramdev had said that he respects the law of the land and the constitution otherwise he would have beheaded lakhs of people for opposing the chanting of Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

“Baba Ramdev is not a member of the BJP. However, I want to know from those who talk of free speech, does it not apply to Baba Ramdev,” Amit Shah told a private TV channel, according to reports.

Ramdev's comment came apparently in response to AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi's remarks that he would not chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai even if a knife is put to his throat.

The whole controversy over the patriotic slogan began after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, while criticising the anti-India slogans allegedly raised on the JNU university campus, said the youth of India should be taught how to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

His remarks had triggered a high decibel debate and was followed by several controversial comments with the latest being that of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who said those who do not chant the slogan have no right to live in India.
