Do or die for Mayawati as BSP gears up for workers' conference

mayawati-quit-rs BSP chief Mayawati

The Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati seems keen to promote the second-rung leadership in the party. The BSP workers’ conference, beginning on September 18 in Meerut, is likely to see this change.

According to a senior BSP leader, Mayawati may announce a major role for her brother Anand Kumar at the conference. She has been slowly grooming Anand for a political role in the party after so many of her trusted lieutenants left her over the past one year. As a first step, she had appointed Anand as the party's vice president in April.

“Not only this, Mayawati also plans to assign a vital role to her nephew, Akash Kumar. This is being done to draw youths towards the party,” the leader said.

The conference will also mark BSP's campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Mayawati may have deliberately chosen the western UP district of Meerut to host the conference. In the 2017 assembly polls and 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BSP fared badly in Western UP which had once been a party stronghold.

According to the BSP leader, now she has plans to consolidate the party especially in western UP districts which has a good number of Dalit and Muslim population. The BSP, which has not been a very tech-savvy party is witnessing a slow change—cadres and supporters have become active on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. Some of accounts through which its supporters have been connecting with the public are ‘Bahujan Bharat’, ‘Behan Mayawati’,’ Dalit News Net work’ and ‘Bahujan Samaj India’. Mayawati has also been holding regular meetings with party workers to review the conference arrangements.

With many of Mayawati's trusted men like Brijesh Pathak, Swami Prasad Maurya, Nassemuddin Siddiqui and O.P. Chaudhary having left her, this conference is seen as a show of strength of the party.
