Owner of the firecracker unit in outer Delhi's Bawana industrial area, where a massive fire broke out on Saturday killing 17 people and injuring two others, was arrested by the Delhi Police on Sunday.

Manoj Jain, who was taken into custody late on Saturday, was arrested on Sunday, said Rohini Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajneesh Gupta.

Gupta added that a case has been registered.

Jain has said he took the factory premises on rent and was running it alone.

Earlier, the police had said Jain was running the unit in partnership with one Lalit Goel.

The police had said an FIR has been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible material. The maximum punishment under section 304 is 10 years.

The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the blaze. While the fire department said the blaze occurred at a firecracker storage unit, the DCP had said they are yet to confirm this. He said it was a matter of investigation if firecrackers were being manufactured too.

The industrial area recorded three fires on Saturday—the first around 4 pm in a carpet manufacturing company in Sector 1, the second in the firecracker unit in Sector 5, and the third in Sector 3 at 7.30pm.
