The victims, belonging to a Dalit community at Mota Samadiyara village of Una taluka, claimed that they were skinning an already dead cow, but the attackers beat them up saying that the cow was killed before being skinned.
In yet another case of vigilante justice, four young men in a tannery were striped, chained and beaten up by a group of people for allegedly killing a cow in Gujarat, reports said on Tuesday. The incident took place in Gir Somnath district, around 400 km from Ahmedabad on Monday.
Three of the six attackers were arrested on Tuesday after the footage of the attack, which they purportedly shared online as a warning to cow killers, went viral.
The video shows four half-naked men tied to the back of a white SUV as the attackers take turns to beat them with iron rods.
The victims, belonging to a Dalit community at Mota Samadiyara village of Una taluka, claimed that they were skinning an already dead cow, but the attackers beat them up saying that the cow was killed before being skinned, reports cited police as saying.
“We have arrested three persons in this connection while three others are absconding. We have also called a team of forensic science laboratory experts and veterinary doctors to ascertain if the cow was already dead before being skinned or was killed for skin,” Gir Somnath district’s deputy superintendent of police K.M. Joshi was quoted as saying.
The FIR said the six accused—identified as Ramesh Giri, Balwant Simer, Ramesh Bhagwan, Rakesh Joshi, Rasikbhai and Nagjibhai Vaniya—came in a car and began abusing the villagers on finding that they were skinning a cow.
“From where did you get the cow skin,” one of the attackers was heard screaming at the victims. Then they allegedly took out iron rods from their car and started beating them up. Two people sustained severe head injuries and were referred to a hospital, Joshi said.
Cow slaughter and a ban on its meat consumption in several states have fuelled a fierce debate over rising intolerance in India. In September, a Hindu mob dragged out Muslim man from his home in Dadri village of Uttar Pradesh and lynched him over suspicion that he had beef in the house.
