Drunk CRPF Jawans unleashed a rampage inside a bar in Howrah township near Kolkata on Thursday night. The bar owners said the six CRPF jawans, who had gathered there for drinks at late evening, wanted the bar owners to continue serving drinks even after 11pm, which the bar owners refused to do.

“When the bar tenders told them that they could not remain open anymore, they started making a scene. They smashed bottles and broke chairs and tables,” said Moly Basu, one of the proprietors.

Howrah police had picked up two Jawans after being alerted by the bar owners. But they were released later at night.

Local residents on Friday, including businessmen, marched to the Howrah police station and launched agitation demanding action against the errant CRPF jawans, who had come from Jharkhand.

Howrah police said it was going through the complaint and informed the CRPF office in Kolkata.

“We could not arrest them as they are from a force and they were on duty. We have informed their office which would take action,” said an officer of Howrah police.

A CRPF spokesman said, “Action will be taken against those guilty. We have ordered a departmental inquiry.”
