The cyber cell of CID, a few days back, had received information from German police that a call centre in Kolkata’s IT park at Salt Lake called German a few people from Hanover city and got them fleeced by getting their debit and credit cards.

Acting on the complaint, CID arrested an employee of the call centre, Akash Singh.

“We held him and put him to a rigorous interrogation. He revealed the truth and named four other colleagues of him,” said a superintendent of the CID.

A young girl, Richa Pipalwa and other youths named as Nilesh Rastogi, Subhrojit Paul and Bikram Singh Pandhey were also arrested simultaneously.

The investigation have revealed that the youths called different people in different countries and provoked the citizens to enter into a financial deal with them. Some Germans fell into their trap and they revealed their card details and money was withdrawn from their account.

Citizens of Hanover approached the police and described their ordeal. Hanover police informed Indian embassy in German and contacted Kolkata police four days back.

“A team of German police would come to Kolkata on Monday and they would examine the accused. They would also try to see how the money could be recovered,” said the officer.

Though the exact amount siphoned was not known, unofficial sources said it would be more than Rs 50 Lakh.

The incident has prompted Kolkata police to keep a close watch on call centres. CID would now make special effort to know the activities of the call centres at Salt Lake’s IT park in Sector V. There are around 75 call centres operating in the IT park.
