Covenant of Mayors to open India chapter soon

The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy will open an India chapter this year. With 7,100 member cities across the world, the convent is the largest network of cities combating climate change with each of the signatories committing themselves to reducing green house gases emission.

The Paris Climate Agreement had acknowledged that mayors and local authorities were crucial partners in fighting climate change.

The Covenant of Mayors Regional Office for India will be part of the International Urban Cooperation Progreamme launched recently by the European Union. This will help India initiate better tie-ups with European cities in access to their market of sustainable development products and research and in transfer of know-hows and capacities.

Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad are witnessing the fastest rates of urbanisation in the world, thus dealing with challenges of providing sufficient infrastructure and connectivity.
