A clash between police and local residents erupted during a Diwali function oraganised by cops at Bharatpur police station of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.

The incident occurred after two inebriated youths entered the venue when a dance programme was under way. According to sources, a few skimpy clad girls were dancing to Bollywood songs and the cops from Bharatpur police station nearby stations were watching the programme.

The policemen thrashed the youths after they tried to tease the girls. Seeing the youths being beaten up, the local residents rushed to the spot and attacked the police. The villagers pelted stones at the cops, forcing them to resort to baton charge. Officer in Charge Swarup Biswas and several other policemen sustained injuries in the incident.

Ten people, including the two youths who teased the girls, were arrested and produced before the court.

The residents accused the police of organising a “nasty” show. “How could the police organise such a bad show with girls wearing revealing outfits?” asked Safikul Islam, a local panchyat member.

Meanwhile, a probe has been ordered by the district police into the event. “We will definitely take action,” said the deputy police superintendent.
