If elected, Congress to probe Akali scams

Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh, on Saturday, said that they would institute investigations into all the Akali scams and punish those found guilty on all scores — particularly drugs. He also said that he would request party high command for a ticket from the Lambi constituency, which is the pocket borough of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, in addition to his home constituency of Patiala. Shiromani Akali Dal is fielding former army chief (Retd) Gen J.J.Singh at Patiala.

This announcement, made at an event in Amritsar, is likely to end the general perception that there exists an underhand deal between him and the Shiromani Akali Dal president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal.

Though never acknowledged by either of them, many in the state reasoned that the deal was that they would not open cases against each other, the way both parties had done in the past.

Capt Amarinder Singh urged the people of the state to refrain from violence against the Badals, and urged them to use their ballot to have their say.
