Gujarat Congress MLAs protest Una flogging, suspended

Even after 45 days of the incident of four dalits youths publicly flogged at Mota Samadhiyala of Una in Gujarat, there seems to be no end to the troubles of the ruling BJP in the state.

The party, which had been facing protests and rallies from dalits, on Tuesday met with protests by the Congress both inside and outside the assembly.

When a discussion on the issue began, the Congress MLAs threw bangles to the well of the house. Fifty MLAs were suspended and evicted from the assembly after they created a ruckus.

Outside the assembly, the Congress leaders and workers organised a 'public anger rally'. More than 1,000 protestors, including top leaders Shankersinh Vaghela, Shaktisinh Gohil and Bharatsinh Solanki, were detained. Police had a tough time controlling the protestors who wanted to lock down the assembly building.

By late afternoon, the BJP sprung into action, issuing press releases. Newly appointed state BJP President Jitubhai Vaghani alleged that Congress MLAs creating ruckus in the assembly and stalling the proceedings show that the party is against Gujarat’s development.

The two-day monsoon session ended on August 23.
