Free houses for those without homes of their own, free education for girls from class one to PhD and waiver of rural debts were among the many promises in the Congress manifesto for Punjab where assembly polls will be held on February 4.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Monday released the manifesto which, very unusually for the grand old party, centered around Punjab Pradesh Congress committee chief and former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Covering various categories under a headline “Captain de naun nukte” (the captain's nine points), the manifesto made a very personalised pitch for Captain Singh. His life as a soldier, his leadership qualities and war against drugs, nepotism, bad governance, disease, inequality, pollution, economic stagnation and unemployment found a place in the party's manifesto.
