Commando raiders and superseded generals honoured

The nation has honoured several of the brave officers and men who commanded and took part in the commando operation across the Line of Control late September, as also the two army commanders who were superseded to the post of army chief have been honoured on the Republic Day.

While the army has been reluctant to part with the names and identity of the officers and men who took part in the cross-LoC operation, the list of winners of Sena Medal for gallantry reveals that it was 4 Para and 9 Para who were involved. There are more than 90 Sena Medal (gallantry) winners this time including 19 who took part in the secret operation. Major Rohit Suri of 4 Para who commanded one of the teams is awarded with a Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award.

Five men from the two para units are also being honoured with Shaurya Chakra; another 13 will get Sena Medal for gallantry.

The commanding officers of the two para units, Col Kapil Yadav (9 Para) and Col Harpreet Sandhu (4 Para) will get Yudh Sewa Medals, which is a service medal for operations.

Among the 20 lieutenant-generals who are getting Param Visisht Sweva Medal, the highest among peacetime service medals, are eastern army commander Praveen Bakshi and southern army commander P.A Hariz, both of whom were superseded for the post of army chief.

Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry honour, has been awarded to Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar of 3/1 Gorkha and Major Rohit Suri. Five lieutenant-generals would get Uttam Yudh Seva Medal.
