Cold waves to continue in Himalayan states

snow-shimla Another Western Disturbance likely to hit the western Himalayas on January 14

This is not Westeros, but winter in North India will continue to be cold for some time with another Western Disturbance likely to hit the western Himalayas on January 14 and the plains on January 15. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted widespread snow and rainfall over western Himalayan region from January 14 to 17.

Monday will arrive with a different kind of Monday blues. Scattered rains are also likely on the plains from January 15 to 17.

The weathermen have warned of heavy rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Monday.

The cold weather took time to set in this season, with December being relatively warm. The first major Western Disturbance of the season (these disturbances, created in Europe, are responsible for cold spells and precipitation over the subcontinent) occurred from January 6 to 8, and resulted in rapid temperature fall from January 9 onwards. A “cold wave” was declared over northwest and central India during January 10 to 13, and many schools were closed immediately after the winter break. The administrations have requested school authorities to be lenient with uniforms and allow children to swaddle themselves warmly, even if it doesn't conform to the school attire.

It is also forecast that the cold spell may abate after the next western disturbance.
