The CBI on Wednesday said it had launched an inquiry against its officers who probed corruption charges hurled against former Corporate Affairs Ministry officer B.K. Bansal who, along with his 31-year-old son, was found hanging at his apartment here on Tuesday.
The agency took the step after Bansal and son Yogesh left behind hand written suicide notes alleging that some CBI officials had tortured them. Bansal's wife and daughter had earlier killed themselves.
"We have today received communication from Delhi Police enclosing therewith the purported hand written notes of B.K. Bansal... and Yogesh. It contains allegations against certain CBI officials in connection with the ongoing bribery investigation against Bansal and others," a Central Bureau of Investigation statement said.
Bansal was arrested on July 16 on charges of taking a bribe of Rs 9 lakh for extending favours to a corporate firm. He was dealing with matters related to alleged violations by a Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company.
A Delhi court had granted bail to Bansal on August 30.
The CBI statement said: "We have examined the matter and decided to probe the allegations.
"CBI is fully committed to conduct investigation in a fair and professional manner without harassment to anyone and strictly within the parameters of law.
"If any violation is established during the probe, strict action will be taken against the CBI officials concerned. The Competent court will be informed," the statement added.
CBI sources said that the investigators will scrutinise the call detail records (CDR) of the officers against whom the allegations had been made by Bansal and his son.
"The records of the particular dates when Bansal was questioned at CBI headquarters will also be probed by the team. Other staff members in the investigating team, Bansal's relatives and neighbours will be examined," said a source.
The inquiry will be conducted against Deputy Inspector General Sanjeev Gautam, Superintendent of Police Amrita Kaur, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rekha Sangwan, investigating officer Harnam Singh and an unnamed head constable.
Bansal's suicide note, accessed by IANS, accuses Sangwan and Kaur of torturing him badly from July 18 night to July 19 night.
Bansal also alleged that Gautam instructed a woman officer on phone to torture his wife and daughter until they looked lifeless.
Bansal said he pleaded with Gautam not to harm his wife and daughter but he was adamant.
"He boasted that if he did make my wife and daughter resemble like the dead, I will not be a CBI DIG Sanjeev Gautam. Your coming generation will remember Sanjeev Gautam," Bansal said in his suicide letter.
Gautam also claimed that he was BJP President Amit Shah's "man" and "no one can harm him".
Bansal and his son were found hanging from ceiling fans by their maid when she entered their flat on the first floor of Neelkanth Apartments in east Delhi's Patparganj area around 8.30 am on Tuesday.
Bansal's body was found in the drawing room and his son's body in one of the bedrooms.
The twin suicides came two months after Bansal's wife and daughter ended their lives in a similar manner.
Bansal's wife Satyabala, 57, and daughter Neha, 27, committed suicide by hanging themselves on July 19 after Bansal was questioned by the CBI.
