A youth who had attempted self-immolation in Chennai in protest against Karnataka's attitude towards sharing of Cauvery river water with Tamil Nadu succumbed to burn injuries on Friday, the Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) party said in a statement.

The youth, identified as Vignesh, was a member of the party founded by film director S. Seeman.

The party statement said Vignesh died on Friday and his body would be kept at the party office in Chennai for people to pay their last respects.

The body would be transported to Vignesh's native place—Mannargudi town—and the final rites would be held there on Saturday.

The self-immolation bid happened on Thursday when the party was holding a rally here in support of Tamil Nadu's claims over Cauvery river water.

Vignesh poured kerosene on himself and lit the match. Though the blaze was doused quickly, he suffered severe burn injuries and was taken to a government hospital for treatment.
