Advertisements of liquor and other commercial ads on the LED screens along the Heritage Street in Amritsar have so offended the people of the city and pilgrims that Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarender Singh has ordered a probe into this violation of sanctity of the place.

The Heritage Street is the last one kilometre leading to the Golden Temple Complex. It was rebuilt early last year by redesigning structures and face of buildings giving them a period flavour, and was inaugurated in early November last.

There are five LED screens, with the biggest of them at 100 feet x 30 feet said to be the largest screen in India. They were installed to relay kirtans and gurbani from within the Darbar Sahib and also give pedestrians outside a continuous glimpse of what was happening inside the Golden Temple complex.

People, particularly pilgrims and the devout local Sikhs, complained to the Golden Temple Reception Office that eventually took up the matter with the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. The corporation  is believed to have got the revenue from these ads.

The probe will be conducted by the additional deputy commissioner of Amritsar, and a report will be submitted to the chief minister within a week.
