The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of former Maharashtra deputy chief minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal.

Enforcement Directorate lawyer Hiten Vengavkar told THE WEEK that the court rejected Bhujbal's plea that the court grants him bail on medical grounds. The court also dismissed a Habeas Corpus petition seeking bail, saying his "arrest" was illegal.

The ED has been investigating Bhujbal for siphoning off and laundering money amounting to several hundreds of crores.

Earlier, Bhujbal's lawyer had argued that his client should be released on bail since he was unwell and undergoing treatment in a hospital. He had once overstayed at a hospital for a month for a thallium scan which could have been completed in a day.

Bhujbal was arrested in March this year.
