A powerful blast took place near the collectorate at Kollam on Wednesday injuring one person. The bomb exploded in a jeep which was parked near the CJM court premises.

A 61-year-old man was injured when the suspected country-made 'steel bomb' kept under the unused jeep exploded at the collectorate-cum-district courts complex. Sabu, hailing from nearby Kundara, was standing near the jeep when the explosion occurred, police said. Sabu suffered injury in his eye and nose and his condition was not serious, police said adding he had been hospitalised. The jeep, KL1G603, was registered in the name of the district labour commissioner.

The bomb exploded with a loud noise at around 10.45am. Police suspect the use of gun powder and say that a timer was used for the explosion. The police has found battery, gunpowder and shards of steel from the court premises. The explosion happened as the court was starting its session.

Police suspect that explosive was deliberately placed under the jeep, which was not in use for a long time, so as to create a scare. Bomb squad and other forensic officials are at the spot. Police said they recovered gelatin sticks and 17 batteries and fuse materials from the jeep.
