GUJARAT POLLS

BJP MP fumes as party nominates daughter-in-law instead of wife

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat found itself in an embarrassing position after its MP Prabhatsinh Chauhan protested against the party preferring his daughter-in-law over his wife to contest in Kalol constituency in the upcoming assembly elections.

Chauhan, MP from Godhra, had asked ticket for his fourth wife Rangeshwari. The party, however, gave ticket for the Kalol seat to his daughter-in-law Suman.

Angered by the move, Chauhan shot off a letter to party's national president Amit Shah mentioning that his son Pravin is a bootlegger and that his wife Suman has been also to jail. Chauhan has also said that he would not be responsible if the BJP loses Kalol and nearby areas.

Earlier, Chauhan had threatened to contest as an independent candidate if his wife was not given the ticket.

Interestingly, the daughter-in-law is much elder to the mother-in-law.

Pravin, whose house was raided in connection with IPL scam, has dabbled into politics without much success. Suman has been a BJP member in the Panchmahals district panchayat for the last two terms.

The BJP's move of giving ticket to a member in the family has given a chance for the opposition Congress to target the ruling party. The BJP has often accused the Congress of indulging into dynastic politics.
