Gujarat police on Thursday foiled a bid by Gujarat Khastriya Thakor Sena leader Alpesh Thakor to lock down TATA Nano plant, about 17 kilometers away from Ahmedabad.

He, along with about 500 of his supporters, was detained near a toll booth near the plant. They were later released.

Thakor had on Wednesday threatened to lock down the Nano Plant, demanding 85 per cent jobs for the local youths in industries in Gujarat.

He had claimed that there were more than 60 lakh unemployed youth in the state, of which around 14 lakh were educated. He alleged that the Gujarat government had been giving benefits running into crores of rupees to the industries but was not compelling them to give jobs to local youths.

Police had denied permission for Thakor's rally and arranged tight bandobast in and around the Nano plant.

The Nano Plant was shifted from Singur, West Bengal to Gujarat during Narendra Modi's tenure as Gujarat chief minister.
