Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has expelled a PhD student hailing from Jammu and Kashmir after his links with the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen came to light.

Hizbul had confirmed that Mannan Bashir Wani (26) had joined the outfit. The matter hogged the limelight on social media recently, when an image of Wani holding an AK-47 rifle went viral.

The issue created an uproar in Aligarh and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the UP police conducted raids in a AMU hostel in search of evidence. After the news became viral, the AMU administration rusticated Wani.

Its proctor, professor M. Mohsin Khan, said that Wani has been banned from entering AMU and all other affiliated institutions.

Wani, who hails from Takipora village of Kupwara district, which is close to the LoC, had taken admission in AMU in 2012 for doing MSc in applied geology and was subsequently doing his PhD from the university.

Wani was in the campus till January 2. After this, he disappeared.

After the raid on room number 237 of Mohammad Habib Hall in which Wani stayed, the police seized some books, pen drive, diaries and literature. These are being examined by the police.

The ADG (law and order, UP) Anand Kumar said that ATS is investigating the matter. The police are also searching for Wani’s roommate, Mujamil, who has not been seen in the university for the past two months.

According to UP police, Wani hails from a well-to-do family in Kupwara. His father is a lecturer in a state college and one of his brothers is an engineer.

In the university, Wani came to prominence when he had allegedly distributed posters of Burhan Wani, a Hizbul commander after he was killed. According to the IG ATS, Aseem Arun, Mannan Wani was on the ATS' radar for quite some time and now his links are being probed more intensively.
