Hyderabad will soon be home to the Afghanistan consulate, the second one in the country after Mumbai. The move is meant to improve friendly ties with India. The country also has an Embassy in Delhi. A delegation will also soon arrive from Afghanistan to Hyderabad to look for a suitable place for the consulate.

Afghanistan’s ambassador to India, Shaida Mohammad Abdali, said,“The consulate in Hyderabad will not only focus on trade and business, but will be a step forward for the expansion of our ties with India at all levels. We are going to expand cooperation in education, commerce and people to people ties, cultural cooperation and cooperation in health sector.” He was attending an event organised by FICCI and FTAPCCI (Federation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry).

He also spoke on the proposal of a sister-city relationship between Hyderabad and Jalalabad. While there is an in-principle agreement, the ambassador said that he was yet to discuss the same with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

There are also talks for starting direct flight services from Hyderabad to Kabul. Currently, direct flights can be availed only from Delhi.

Pushing business as its first priority, the Afghan ambassador said that there would be a major business summit in Delhi within the next two months to attract investments from across the globe for the Chabahar port in Iran.
