Taking their battle against casteism to a new level, mother and brother of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar who committed suicide at Hyderabad University, will embrace Buddhism on Thursday.

Thursday marks the 125th birth anniversary of the Dalit icon Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

Prakash Ambedkar, former MP and Ambedkar's grandson said a deeksha ceremony has been organised at Ambedkar Bhavan in Mumbai. Rohith's brother Raja and mother Radhika will be given deeksha by Buddhist monks.

“I have no ill feeling toward Hindus but my conscience doesn’t allow me to continue in this religion. It is because of the Hindu caste system that my brother was harassed, humiliated and forced to take his own life,” Raja was quoted as saying by the HT. He said Rohith’s last rites were conducted as per Buddhist traditions.

Rohith committed suicide by hanging on January 17, days after he was suspended along with four other students for allegedly assaulting an ABVP student. The suicide had triggered a storm with many holding the university authorities and HRD ministry responsible for his death.
