Six policemen of Crime Branch of Jabalpur were suspended after they were accused of firing at a suspected criminal and looting Rs 1.5 lakh from him when the latter was travelling in his car.
Superintendent of Police of Jabalpur Shashikant Shukla told media that he has suspended the six policemen after Akash Gawkar complained to police that he was attacked by them on Thursday night near Cherital area of Kotwali police station.
He said in his complaint that six cops stopped him and snatched Rs 1.5 lakh from him when he was coming back from work. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, Manjeet Singh, said that Gawkar was returning from Ganesh Chaturthi celebration after a session of gambling. He was stopped by the police officers namely Bhupendra Singh, Rashid, Rajveer, Birbal, Sadiq and Mahendra.
Singh said that though Gawkar has many cases registered against him, the way this incident has happened prompted the police to investigate the case. Police have registered the case under Section 307, 34 of Indian Penal Code and SC/ST Act. Gawkar was admitted to hospital with bullet injuries on his shoulder.
Gawkar in his complaint said that cops attempted a fake encounter on him but he was saved. They left him after he was hit by a bullet.
However, the policemen from the Crime Branch have an entirely different version of the incident. They said that they had received information about illegal transportation of arms by a group of miscreants in the vehicle. The men were intoxicated and when they were asked to surrender, they fired at the policemen.
